Since its founding in 1852 the Unitarian Church of Staten Island, for the first time in its history, experienced the pews in a circle during the December 17, 2006 service. This Solstice Service was led by Consulting Minister, Nate Walker, who writes: “The power of solstice lies not simply in the astrological calculations of our position to the sun but in the metaphor of solstice: a reminder that the day may be waning but our hope continues to grows; the night may be long but the light leads on.”

This speech was given on the eve of the oral arguments for the New York State Appellate case on Marriage Equality on May 30, 2006 at the Memorial United Methodist Church in White Plains, New York.
